Building a pharmacist-approved skincare routine

Most skincare routines fail for the same reason: too many active ingredients, too soon, with no clear plan. A good routine is not about how many bottles sit on your shelf - it is about doing the right few things consistently, in the right order, for your skin type.
The four pillars
Every effective routine - whatever your age, skin type or concern - comes back to four pillars: cleanse, treat, moisturise, protect. Master those before you add anything else.
Morning
The goal of your morning routine is to defend. You are preparing your skin for daylight, UV, pollution and free radicals.
- Cleanser - a gentle, low-foam cleanser or simply lukewarm water if your skin is dry or sensitive.
- Antioxidant serum - vitamin C (10–20% L-ascorbic acid, or a stable derivative if you are sensitive) neutralises free radicals and boosts the performance of your SPF.
- Moisturiser - choose by texture: gel-cream for oily, lotion for normal, richer cream for dry.
- SPF 30–50 - non-negotiable, every single day, indoors and out.
Evening
The goal at night is to repair. Your skin is in regenerative mode while you sleep, so this is when actives do their best work.
- Double cleanse if you wear SPF or make-up - an oil or balm first, then a gentle water-based cleanser.
- Treatment - this is your one active ingredient. A retinoid for ageing and texture, an acid (BHA / AHA) for congestion or pigmentation, or a soothing serum if your skin is reactive.
- Moisturiser - pick something repairing with ceramides, squalane or peptides.
The golden rules
- Introduce one active at a time. Give it 4–6 weeks before judging.
- Less is more. Two well-chosen serums beat five competing ones.
- SPF every day. Up to 80% of visible ageing is photoageing - sunscreen is the single highest-impact product you can use.
- Be patient. Skin renews on a roughly 28-day cycle; meaningful results take 8–12 weeks.
What you do not need
You do not need a 10-step routine, a toner, a separate eye cream, or a different product for every day of the week. A focused routine - cleanser, antioxidant, moisturiser, SPF, plus one nighttime active - is enough to transform almost any skin.
Start simple, stay consistent, and let the ingredients do the work.
